To many, a list of the greatest car manufacturers of italy may struggle to reach past ferrari, lamborghini, alfa romeo and perhaps maserati. But pose that same question to a full-blooded petrol head, and lancia would likely be the first word out of their mouth. Founded in 1906 by vincenzo lancia, the company that bore his name went on to produce some of the most thoughtfully engineered and stylish automobiles the world has seen. Standard lancias were generally more conservative than a comparable alfa or maserati, however lancia cars are often compared with the likes of mercedes-benz for their level of build quality and engineering excellence. In practice, lancia combined the best of both worlds - building automobiles that combined sophisticated engineering and brisk performance wrapped in gorgeous, unmistakably italian bodywork. Their engineering prowess was reflected on the race track and special stage, where they have enjoyed tremendous success. From the 1960s to the 1990s, rallying was lancia's venue of choice where they hold a record ten world constructor's championships. Aside from their quality, lancia has always been known as a great innovator, responsible for many important firsts such as independent front suspension, the now ubiquitous v6 engine, and the first production car designed to use radial tires; the latter two debuting with the brilliant aurelia. In 1957, the firm introduced the aurelia's equally outstaning replacement, the flaminia. The white main body is contrasted with a silver-painted roof with matching silver wheels. This history of this handsome lancia picks up in 1974 when it was purchased by jeff cooper from a giuliano verna motors in bala cynwyd, pa. Period photos show him enjoying the car in lancia club events in the late 70s. In 1989, the flaminia was purchased by a well-known lancia enthusiast and unofficial marque ambassador, tom sheehan. He purchased the car mid-restoration, after mr. Cooper ran out of funds to complete the project. The restoration was completed and he retained the car until his death in 1994, when the car passed through the hands of several other enthusiasts before it found its way back to the late walt spak, a trusted lancia expert and longtime friend and associate of mr. Sheehan, who remembered the car fondly. Spak's time, it found a home in a prominent collection of italian cars, but the dealer who sold it very quickly bought it back for his own use, as he was so very fond of this elegant lancia. The white painted main body is subtly accented by the gray painted roof. Along with the high-quality paint, the exterior has recently been refreshed with several new gaskets including for the front and back glass. Brightwork, including the chrome bumpers and delicate alloy body moldings is all very well-presented. The car rides on proper michelin x radials mounted to factory original steel wheels and dressed with large-faced lancia hubcaps - lending the car a clean, modern-design appearance. Opening the door reveals a recently restored interior in fine condition. The tan hides on the seats and door panels provide a subtle contrast to the white body color, adding a rich and inviting appeal. The gray paint of the roof is mirrored on the dash, which is fitted with original jaeger dials and original switchgear. The carpeting is very tidy, and the light grey color ties in with the paint scheme quite nicely. The carpeting is protected by a set of factory-correct fluted rubber mats in light gray. The engine compartment very tidy and well-detailed with proper wrinkle-finish valve covers, a correct original tri-carb air cleaner, and correct hoses, fittings and clamps. Even the fiamm air horns are painted their signature bright red hue, just visible through the grille. Included in the sale is a comprehensive history binder that documents the extensive past restoration work, including some recent freshening work that occurred in 2015.

Since the earliest days of lancia, the torino-based car builder took an innovative and ingenious approach in their quest to produce some of the finest cars available. In the post-war years, both alfa romeo and lancia drastically shifted focus from limited production luxury cars to mid-priced, mass-produced gt cars and saloons. Also like their neighbors at alfa romeo, most lancia models were available in berlina, coupe or cabriolet form, designed and built by a variety of preferred italian coachbuilders. With the v6-powered, monocoque aurelia leading the range into the 1950s, lancia required more entry-level models to stay afloat and compete with alfa's new giulietta. The aurelia was joined by the v4-powered appia, an entry level car in terms of price but still built with the same high standard of engineering excellence and quality ingrained into every lancia product. Following in the footsteps of the appia, came an all-new car for 1963: the narrow-angle v4-powered, front-drive fulvia. The fulvia's elegantly simple monocoque chassis featured independent wishbone front suspension with a single transverse leaf spring, backed by a beam rear axle located by a panhard rod. The berlina was certainly a capable and stylish little car, but it was the crisp and elegant coupe that captured the most attention, and has since become a true icon among enthusiasts. While the fulvia coupe's rallying exploits have certainly cemented its legendary status among hardcore enthusiasts, the road going fulvia is no less brilliant. The simple and elegant styling was executed in-house rather than by an outside coachbuilder. Collectors have caught on to these brilliant little cars and as such, values have been steadily on the rise, with the rally-bred 1. 6hf topping the charts. Lancia's exquisite fulvia truly is one of the greatest driver's cars of all time. Chimenti enjoyed his fulvia for many years before handing the car over to his family mechanic for careful storage and maintenance. It remained in chimenti's ownership until 2012. in 2013, the fulvia arrived in the usa where it was treated to a no-expense-spared mechanical and cosmetic refurbishment, with great care given to preserve its exceptional originality. The body is straight and tidy with very good older paint and nice, factory precise panel gaps. Some light texture is evident in the paint in places but it is overall a very presentable and imminently attractive car. The sparse and delicate brightwork presents in very good condition, a mix of carefully selected originals, restored pieces and correct replacements. The restorer resisted the urge to fit larger wheels, instead restoring the correct originals which are wrapped in proper michelin xas rubber. The car sits proudly, looking proper and light on its feet, the correct wheels and tires retain the fulvia's delicacy and communicative feedback. Oem headlamps with distinctive yellow bulbs add yet another layer of appeal. The simple yet stylish cabin is trimmed in caramel tan upholstery with black carpets, trim and correct rubber mats. Front and rear, the seats are in fine order and complement the matching door cards. Rubber mats and other soft trim are in excellent condition, and the dash panel is free of cracks or fading. The original fiberboard fascia has been replaced with a gorgeous, glossy wood piece and the original jaeger instruments have been carefully and thoroughly restored. The original shift knob remains in place and a period correct nardi steering wheel dresses up the cabin nicely. Original touches such as lancia dealer decals in the quarter windows and a very cool dealer-accessory service calendar add to the delightful period charm of this fine fulvia. Lifting the bonnet reveals a very correct and well detailed engine bay. The narrow-angle 1. 3 liter v4 engine is very tidy and honestly presented with correct wiring and hardware, proper finishes on the ancillaries and factory-correct decals and markings. The undercarriage is similarly tidy, with factory assembly marks present on the subframes. The chassis was refurbished with fresh and correct decarbon shocks and the tricky front axle cv joint boots replaced. The original jack, vinyl spare wheel cover, and lancia tool kit remain in place. Thanks to the careful and sympathetic work it received from its most recent keeper, it remains fresh and ready for enjoyment, certain to capture the heart of its next owner.

1955 Lancia Aurelia B24S Spider America

The history of b24s 1077 can be traced back to july 1955, when it was sold to its first owner, luigi bosisio of milan. A well-known gentleman driver, bosisio was a frequent competitor in major italian events throughout the early 1950s and owned a number of outstanding sports cars, including a lancia aurelia b20 gt, fiat 8v, maserati a6gcs, and a zagato-bodied ferrari 166 mm. After a short period in the care of bosisio, the spider america was sold to roberto longhi who, in turn, sold it to santino bertele. In february 1958, sig. Bertele sold the lancia to federico de gregorio. The spider america's fifth owner, gianni savoia of verona, purchased the car from sig. De gregorio in the early 1960s and retained it until 1983, when it was sold to a local classic car dealer. Later that year, the b24s was sold to american enthusiast richard citron but was stored in italy and never exported. In 1985, famed formula one team director jean sage acquired the spider america for his private collection. Well known in racing circles, sage began his involvement in motorsports as a driver in the 1960s, before establishing the successful ecurie elf-switzerland team with gerard larrousse and paul archambeaud. Sage then went on to run renault's formula one effort from 1977 to 1985, during which time the team won 15 races and pioneered the use of turbocharged engines. Following his retirement from formula one, sage became an avid classic car collector, raced in leading vintage events, and managed several major racing teams including ferrari france. The spider america remained a fixture in sage's collection for over a decade and, between 1995 and 1996, was fully restored by italian marque specialists. In early 1998, sage sold the lancia to michael theo trosser, a collector living in neuss, germany. Trosser applied for and was subsequently granted a fiva identity card, with the desirable a3 classification. After some years, trosser sold the lancia to a spanish artist, who kept the spider america in her studio and rarely drove it. The next owner, a discerning florida collector, was an excellent steward for the spider america, and he went through great lengths to enhance its already superb presentation. Additionally, the lancia was serviced as needed and given a comprehensive mechanical inspection. The car was sent to paul russell and company in massachusetts, and it was given new leather in the color of sierra autumn, and a correct radio and speaker were installed. Mechanical aspects of the car were addressed as needed. The soft top was refitted with new fabric, and the undercarriage, engine bay, and exterior were detailed. The work was completed in june of 2014 and totaled more than $88,000. The lancia's most recent owner is a noted american collector who maintained the car's impeccable show-ready condition. This sophisticated spider america is equipped with two of the most rare and desirable accessories available for the model - the attractive carrozzeria fontana aluminum hardtop and the high-performance nardi kit, which features twin weber 40 dcl5 carburetors and a special intake manifold. As noted on the car's fiva identity card, these optional features have been with this spider america from new, making this a particularly special example of the b24s. It is little wonder that lancia enthusiasts and knowledgeable collectors have always held the spider americas in such high regard. As a result, these rare lancias are found only in the best collections and seldom appear for public sale. The sporting potential of the aurelia was realized with the introduction of the b20 gt. At the 1951 mille miglia, a factory-prepared gt driven by bracco and maglioli won the under-two-liter category and placed 2nd overall behind the scuderia ferrari 340 america. Not only did the standard aurelia models prove their merit in competition, they formed the basis for lancia's first purpose-built sports racing cars, the d20, d23, d24, and d25. These magnificent machines, particularly the legendary d24, were some of the most technologically advanced and successful competition cars of the early 1950s. At the brussels motor show in january 1955, lancia unveiled their most sporting aurelia - the b24 spider america. With a top speed approaching 115 mph, the spider america was among the best performing open sports cars of its day and an ideal choice for the well- heeled enthusiast. Only 250 would be built between 1954-55. 181 left-hand drive cars and 59 in right-hand drive. The spider america's coachwork, masterfully styled, and constructed by carrozzeria pinin farina, featured voluptuous sculpted lines, cut-down doors, split bumpers front and rear, as well as a splendid panoramic wraparound windscreen - the latter feature undoubtedly inspired by american styling trends of the period. In keeping with its sporting nature, the spider america was a strict two-seater with a light folding top and side curtains in lieu of more conventional wind-up windows. As its name suggested, the new lancia sports car was aimed at the booming american market and the vast majority built were specified in left-hand drive. In total, just 240 spider americas were built before lancia replaced the model with the more practical b24 convertible. Due to their exceptional rarity, beauty, and performance, the spider americas are widely regarded as the most desirable road-going lancias ever built.
