In the late summer of 2016 it was diagnosed with terminal rot in the driver's side A pillar, compromising the integrity of the unibody, and we've finally given up on it. The terminal issue was discovered as we were trying to sort out a puzzling mystery with the power steering, which is way too heavy on on side. That the appeal of owing a classic like this 1985 mercury capri asc mclaren convertible. The fact that it's also a loaded affordable v8 classic is just the cherry on top. Those who don't know the history of these asc mclarens are always curious about what this convertible is, and those in the know just say wow! That's because these are a rare creation. Costing nearly as much as a lincoln coupe when new, there were less than 260 of these convertibles produced in 1985. The reason for the expense is because the droptop masters at asc were contracted to give the premium mercury capri its own upper-level convertible. This included a new ground effects kit, special hood, and a unique decklid. It's a two-seater with a flush-fitting roof when the top is town, just like a mercedes sl. But we actually like it even more with the top up, because the profile is truly unique compared to its mustang sibling. In fact, this newer blue roof helps highlight the full color coordinating package that came on these asc mclarens. After all, the dark metallic blue and white two-tone is a unique presentation that draws attention even in the details like the color-matched honeycomb wheels and standout orange trim. Inside this one provides the right kind of luxury mixed with performance. It's loaded with all the right equipment like power windows, cruise control, and an upgraded am/fm/cd stereo with aux inputs for the most modern music players. The wood paneled dash has plenty of great features, including a full gauge package. As special as this car is inside and out, we love that under the hood is a trusty 5. 0-liter. This was one of the best v8s of the day and components are plentiful. That means this rare asc mclaren has nice power and is easy to maintain. It was purchased through the armed forces car network. The car is complete with every option that was available. The paint is all original canyon red. The motor is the first production of the 5. 0 fuel injected option and t-5 transmission. The interior is special ordered for this model, charcoal gray with red piping. The car was ordered with t-tops, electric windows and the ford gt handling package. This was the last year the 1986 mercury capri fox body was built. This car has been driven on the auto-bon in germany and across the u. Washington state is where this car has been parked in a warm garage. This car was a daily driver (only sunny days) and maintained by me to very high standards. Oil changes completed every 3,000 miles and a new clutch installed at 50,000 miles. The starter and water pump were just replaced. The air intake is an add-on and the plugs and plug wires are new. The shocks are heavy duty and the sway-bar has polyurethane bushings.
