2004 scion xb review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. But the brand name toyota doesn't click with this crowd. Neither does the present line up, starting with the echo and closing with the avalon. The scion xb is one of three all-new models wearing the new badge and can now be found in about 80 percent of the toyota showrooms in california. In february 2004, scion will expand to the south and east coast. Scion is expected to complete its national rollout in spring 2004.  the success of the scion xb depends in part on how it stands out in the market. There's no question it stands out visually. The scion xb is a box on wheels. Built by toyota to high standards of quality, durability and reliability, the scion xb feels tight and quiet, with little wind noise and no squeaks or rattles. It rides smoothly and is easy to drive with good brakes and a smooth clutch. It's no hot rod, however, so shifting into lower gears is needed for quick acceleration. Inside, it's roomy and has a nice interior with controls that are easy to operate. The driver and passengers sit upright in chair-like seats and enjoy excellent visibility. These comprise both appearance and functional items. Among the eye-candies are clear tail lamp lenses, rear bumper applique, body side graphics, led interior lighting, carbon fiber shift knob, sport pedals and instrument panel applique. Adding function are a leather-wrapped steering wheel (red or gray), front strut tower brace, fog lamps, cup holder illumination, removable roof rack, 6-cd changer, satellite radio tuner and antenna, cold-air induction system and an assortment of handling and performance goodies from toyota racing development. Accessory prices range from $49 for a shift knob to $665 for aluminum alloy wheels. walkaroundthe scion xb looks like nothing else on the road. Even the boxy 2003 honda element seems almost curvaceous next to this exercise in extreme angularity.  side body panels composed of sheets of virtually flat metal and glass join at right angles with a flat roof, a flat hood and a flat liftgate. Only the barest hint of a curve softens the front end and windshield.  tall doors open wide. Top-hinged outside door handles fit smoothly into the xb's slab-sided styling, but they're less ergonomic and less friendly to fingernails than open, full-round handles like those found, ironically, on the xb's more traditionally styled sibling, the xa. Instead of their traditional location directly in front of the driver, the instruments huddle in a slight depression centered on the top of the dash. By way of explanation, the car maker says this placement makes the instruments easier to see because they're closer to both the driver's line of sight through the windshield and the driver's eyes' focal plane. It no doubt helps that this also saves cost in a car built in both right-hand and left-hand drive versions. As for driving the car, initially, at least, encountering a blank landscape of nicely textured plastic between the spokes of the steering wheel where gauges 'ought' to be takes some acclimation. Once acclimated, the driver finds a large, black-on-white speedometer, a smallish tachometer and an even smaller fuel gauge.  the seats are more like chairs than car seats, raised somewhat above the mostly flat floor. Side bolsters on the seat back and seat bottom cushions are minimal, so entry and exit are relatively unhindered. The design of the seats indicates the xb is not intended to be a sports car. The floor-mounted shift lever falls readily to hand, as does the hand-operated emergency brake. Pedals are ergonomically placed.  the broad expanses of glass make outward visibility stellar, easing some of the stress often triggered by urban traffic and tight parking spaces.  interior quality is better than decent, especially given the xb's price point. Fit and finish are up to toyota's standards. The stereo is mounted above the air conditioning controls, where logic says it should be. The a/c settings are adjusted with basic knobs, buttons and lever. But the stereo plays to people to whom directional buttons and pda cursor pads are intuitive. The scion's interior stylists missed the boat on the dash-mounted vents. Eyeball shaped, these could have been allowed to rotate in all planes, like those on the toyota tercel. Instead, the xb's pivot only vertically.  as severe as the xb's outside is, it delivers on its promise of a roomy inside. Next to the two cars toyota expects the scion to go head to head with, the honda civic and the vw golf, the xb leads in virtually every passenger compartment measurement, and generally not by small amounts. Amazingly, the xb boasts nearly 3 inches more front-seat headroom and 7 inches more rear-seat headroom than the element, despite the element being 6 inches taller. The element tops the xb, however, offering 74. 6 cubic feet of cargo space versus the xb's 43. 4 cubic feet. And be forewarned, ordering the subwoofer speaker requires forfeiting about 2 square feet of the cargo area's floor space.  cubby space is about normal for the class. There are the usual map pockets in the doors, cupholders front and rear and so on. There's a nook in the lower half of the dash to the left of the steering column, a cranny to the right of the column and a visually symmetrical, but taller and wider, shelf-like opening above the glove box. driving impressionthe scion is a small toyota. With that comes quality design and assembly, which translates into minimal wind noise; no odd vibrations, buzzes, squeaks or rattles; and no harshness, really, at least nothing beyond what might be expected in a relatively lightweight, short-wheelbase car.  but as far as the xb's driving and handling dynamics are concerned, steering assist is about right and response to inputs is directional. Some torque steer was evident, and there's a bit of kick back over uneven trolley tracks but nothing untoward on either account. Clutch take-up is smooth, although the gear changes could have been crisper. Torque peaks at rather high engine speeds, so revving it up in lower gears is advisable for merging onto freeways. Scion xb gets 31/35 mpg on the epa city/highway test.  body lean in corners is minimal, notwithstanding the tallish glass house. It's difficult to envision the xb in a situation requiring a steadying hand from the vehicle stability control system, but it's standing by in the event it's needed. summarylooks matter, in cars more than in most material things. Thus, perhaps the most remarkable impression from driving the xb was the lack of turning heads drawn by the stand-out body style. Even so, there may be something to be said for being the first on the block to have one. The federal government calls the scion xb a small wagon. In any case, the scion xb is a toyota, indicating the potential of many years of trouble-free, squeak-free ownership. It's also aggressively priced. model lineupxb 13,680). options as testedsport package 353) includes pedal covers, shift knob and front strut tower brace; exterior package 758) includes body side graphic, rear spoiler and b-pillar and fuel filler door appliques; light package 879) includes led interior light kit, cup holder illumination, and fog lamps; carpet floor and cargo mats 120); alloy wheels 665); scion security 429); sound package 774) includes am/fm/6-disc cd changer and subwoofer. model testedscion xb 13,680). 2005 scion tc review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. This little rocket was developed in only 13 months with a single purpose in mind.  the scion tc means to make mincemeat of the honda civic that is so popular with gen y drivers by offering a single, very well equipped model at a nearly unbeatable low price and a menu of options that will allow owners to built cars unique to their tastes.  the engine is quiet, smooth, and plenty powerful. The steering, ride quality and handling are commendable. Braking is powerful, with abs and electronic brake force distribution standard. This car is surprisingly quiet, the interior materials are first-rate, and attention to detail is evident. The bucket seats are comfortable and there's enough room to suit tall drivers. A 160-watt stereo is standard, and a full array of airbags is available.  this is perhaps the best small japanese coupe we have ever driven, at a price that is ridiculously low. lineupthe scion tc hatchback coupe 15,950) comes only one way, with no model name attached. (they apparently couldn't call it xc because volvo already uses xc90 for its sport utility). It comes with all the major comfort and convenience items built in, including air conditioning, power steering, brakes, locks and mirrors, a tilt wheel, a 160-watt pioneer 6-cd changer am/fm setup, sport bucket seats with cloth seating and position memory, two-tiered console, reclining front and rear seats, keyless entry, engine immobilizer, cargo cover, and a dozen other items.  there are only two factory-installed options, the automatic transmission at $845 and the side and roof air bag system for $650. To make the car more palatable to more people, scion has chosen a menu of 40 different freestanding options, more than any other car in its class, ranging from a $4500 supercharger kit good for 200 horsepower to a selection of different chrome and leather shift knobs. Special toyota racing development (trd) high-performance items for the scion tc include 18- and 19-inch wheels, a lowering kit, struts and shock absorbers, rear anti-roll bar, a high-performance clutch, a quick shifter, a stainless steel muffler, and a shift-point indicator light kit. Toyota's high-performance arm is already working on a 300-horsepower package of parts for the lunatic fringe. walkaroundthe look of the scion tc is one of purposeful performance. It's not blatant, and it doesn't come with spoilers, rocker moldings or wings, but all the ingredients are there. The standard panorama glass roof is an unexpected bonus in this price class, fitted without gaskets for a tight, no-creaks fit. It filters 97 percent of uv rays and 100 percent of infrared, to avoid damage to occupants.  the doors are quite long for such a small car, and the door handles of the reach-around-and-pull variety that we like. The long rear side window suggests a two-door sedan more than a hatchback coupe, and makes the design flow from front to rear gracefully. The tc is the first purpose-built scion, the other two having been developed from concept vehicles, and although it is inexpensive, it is anything but cheap. interiorinside the scion tc, there are lots more positive surprises. Materials are first-rate, there aren't a whole lot of different grains and textures, and the swoopy brushed-metal center stack housing vents, sound system and climate control system, is a marvel of modern design. Very comfortable, with enough fore/aft adjustment to suit very tall american drivers regardless of age. The driver's and shotgun seats can be reclined all the way down into what scion calls a 'sleep' position, and the rear seats recline through 10 stops and 45 degrees of recline to convert the interior into a conversation bin. With seats up, there's more than 26 inches of cargo length there; with the second seats dropped, almost 60 inches; and with the front passenger seat folded over, almost 104 inches of cargo length available.  there are lots of convincing little touches indoors, like the mechanical seat position memory on the front bucket seats, the 60/40 split folding rear seat, the very decent amount of storage space with the seats down, the dead pedal for the driver's left foot, fully closing vents, and a cover for the stereo system's faceplate. The three-pod instrument panel is amber-illuminated, deeply tunneled and easy to use, day or night, as are the balance of the instruments and controls. driving impressionthe engine in the scion tc has been around in one form or another as a car and truck powerplant for many years, continuously improved for power, torque, and toyota levels of quietness and reliability. It comes with electronic variable valve timing for good low end torque development, and twin balance shafts for smoothness. Tuned to 160 horsepower and 163 foot-pounds of torque for this application, the engine is quiet, smooth, and plenty powerful in a 2900-pound car, and at full throttle, it sounds powerful without being intrusive, because it has a valved muffler that opens up at high rpm and can be worth as much as 5 horsepower.  the transmission gearing in the automatic that we drove for this test is wholly unsuitable for bigtime acceleration, with an overall ratio of just over 10:1 (the first-gear ratio times the axle ratio), while the manual is almost 50 percent lower, almost 15:1, for maximum acceleration in first gear. However, the automatic does move out smartly, it's obviously much easier to live with in gooey traffic, and will get significantly better highway mileage than the manual, which is saddled with a very low 4. 235 axle ratio. No complaints on the powertrain.  the steering, ride quality and overall handling of the scion tc were commendable, in part due to its 106-inch wheelbase, longest in the class. It steers with a hefty touch, but accurate pointing, and transitions are easy and without drama. That's because the tc has low-cost macpherson strut front suspension coupled with an expensive independent double-wishbone rear suspension not found on many cars in this price class. Bridgestone potenza tires originally developed for the hot-rod lexus is 300 are standard.  braking is accomplished with a combination of ventilated front and sold rear discs, 10. 8 inches front and 10. 6 inches rear, generously sized and quite powerful for a car this light, with both abs and electronic brake force distribution built into the standard price. All it takes is money. There's nothing missing. Bucket Seats✔ AM/FM✔ Climate Control✔ CD Changer✔ Air Conditioning

2005 scion xb review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Stylish, inexpensive and practical. introductionthe scion xb is a box on wheels with strong styling that grabs attention, often from members of the opposite sex. It's a five-passenger wagon that doesn't look like a wagon. Nor does it look like a toyota, though it's built by toyota and carries the company's high standards of quality, durability and reliability.  as a result, the scion xb feels tight. And it's quiet, with little wind noise and no squeaks or rattles. Inside, it's roomy and has a nice interior with controls that are easy to operate. The driver and passengers sit upright in chair-like seats and enjoy excellent visibility. These comprise both appearance and functional items. Among the eye-candies are clear tail lamp lenses, rear bumper applique, body side graphics, led interior lighting, carbon fiber shift knob, sport pedals, and an instrument panel applique. Adding function are a leather-wrapped steering wheel (red or gray), front strut tower brace, fog lamps, cup holder illumination, removable roof rack, 6-cd changer, satellite radio tuner and antenna, cold-air induction system, and an assortment of handling and performance goodies from toyota racing development. walkaroundthe styling of the scion xb is polarizing. It drew numerous accolades, looks of approval, and positive hand signals from people in miami and south florida.  the scion xb looks like nothing else on the road. Sheets of flat metal and glass on the sides join at right angles with a flat roof, a flat hood and a flat liftgate. Only the barest hint of a curve softens the front end and windshield. A honda element looks curvaceous when parked alongside this exercise in extreme angularity.  the wheels and tires look tiny under the boxy exterior. Aftermarket alloys that fill the wheel wells would likely improve its looks.  tall doors open wide. Top-hinged outside door handles fit smoothly into the xb's slab-sided styling, but they're less ergonomic and less friendly to fingernails than open, full-round handles like those found on the xb's more traditionally styled sibling, the xa. The seats are more like chairs than car seats, raised somewhat above the mostly flat floor. Side bolsters on the seat back and seat bottom cushions are minimal making for easy entry and exit. The floor-mounted shift lever falls readily to hand, as does the hand-operated emergency brake. Pedals are ergonomically placed.  gauges are centered on the top of the dash instead of being directly in front of the driver. Scion says this makes the instruments easier to see because they're closer to the driver's line of sight through the windshield and focal plane. No doubt this also saves cost in a car built for markets around the world that use both right-hand and left-hand steering. We found the blank landscape between the spokes of the steering wheel takes some acclimation. At night, we kept wondering, 'where are the dash lights?' once acclimated, the driver finds a large, black-on-white speedometer, a small tachometer and a small fuel gauge.  the broad expanses of glass make outward visibility stellar, good for heavy traffic and tight parking spaces. Big outside mirrors afford a good view rearward.  interior quality is better than decent, especially given the xb's price point. Fit and finish are up to toyota standards. The stereo is mounted above the air conditioning controls because they're operated more often. Temperature and ventilation settings are adjusted with basic knobs, buttons and lever. But the stereo plays to people used to directional buttons and pda cursor pads.  the xb's exterior styling suggests a roomy interior and it delivers on this promise. Compared with the honda civic and vw golf, the xb leads in virtually every passenger compartment measurement, and generally not by small amounts. Scion xb delivers about 6 inches more front and rear headroom and 3-5 inches more legroom than civic and golf offer. Amazingly, the xb boasts nearly 3 inches more front-seat headroom and 7 inches more rear-seat headroom than the element, despite the element being 6 inches taller. The element easily tops the xb, however, offering 74. 6 cubic feet of cargo space versus the xb's 43. 4 cubic feet.  ordering the available subwoofer takes up 2 square feet of floor space in the cargo area. Worse, it's mounted right smack in the middle rear of the cargo area and is really in the way when loading or unloading materials. There are the usual map pockets in the doors, cupholders front and rear and so on. There's a nook in the lower half of the dash to the left of the steering column, a cranny to the right of the column and a shelf-like opening above the glove box. driving impressionthe ride is firm. At first, the xb didn't generate a lot of confidence when braking and cornering, especially when they're done at the same time, but confidence in its capabilities increases with time behind the wheel. Body lean in corners is minimal, notwithstanding the tallish glass house. It's difficult to envision the xb in a situation requiring the vehicle stability control system, but it's standing by in the event it's needed, ready to eliminate any skidding. Steering assist is about right. Torque peaks at rather high engine speeds, so revving it up in lower gears is advisable for merging onto freeways. Scion xb gets excellent gas mileage: 31/35 mpg on the epa city/highway test with the manual, 30/34 with the automatic.  the automatic is responsive enough. Gear changes with the manual shifter could have been crisper, but clutch take-up is smooth. Brakes feel solid and hold well on steep hills.  the scion is a small toyota. With that comes quality design and assembly, which translates into minimal wind noise; no odd vibrations, buzzes, squeaks or rattles; and no harshness, really, at least nothing beyond what might be expected in a relatively lightweight, short-wheelbase car. summarythe scion xb features trendy styling, a roomy cabin, and is priced aggressively. When it comes to moving stuff around, it's better than a compact car. Because it's a toyota, owners should expect and expect and demand solid quality and the durability and reliability associated with the marque. model lineupscion xb 13,680). options as testedalloy wheels 665); wheel locks 59); sound package 774) includes am/fm/6cd, bazooka tube subwoofer; security system 429); light package 879) includes luxaura led enhancement, cup holder illumination, fog lights; logo brown exterior package 758) includes rear spoiler, body-side graphic, b-pillar applique, fuel-filler applique; preferred package 366) includes carpeted floor mats, cargo mat, cargo net, acsco door sill enhancements, rear bumper applique. model testedscion xb automatic 14,480).
