The Mercury line of vehicles was intended to bridge the gap between the Ford V8 and the Lincoln line of vehicles and by 1949 chose the same body style of the Lincoln but with different headlights and front grill and that style became an icon of American hot rods of the time. In the movie Rebel without a cause the great James Dean drove a 1949 Mercury sedan and many of these fell into the hands of hot-rodders who chopped the tops and added lake pipes and large V8 engines. This example has been kept in the original state and has received much love and TLC over the years and is now a very nice running and driving classic that has room for the whole family

1949 mercury eight - grand rapids, migr auto gallerygrand rapids, mi 49512ph: 8554636584web: www. Carsforsale. Com/used_cars_for_sale/dealerinventory. Dealerid=471615options:description:coming off a nationwide freeze of manufacturing, mercury began their production of their first vehicle since world war ii. The legendary flathead v8 continued into the new model year but with a slight improvement in power, the transmission received an excellent option for overdrive giving it a bit of an easier to manage top speed and with its new “ponton” styling found on the mercury eight, this vehicle became an instant hit. This new design gave the mercury eight a much more distinct look differentiating it from its cousin, the lincoln, and although lincoln was popular in sales that year as well, mercury went on to take honors for most sales and broke the record amount in its first year after war. The first few years of mercury post-war became a popular car to customize and even developed a catchy name, the “lead sled”. This mass market for hot rods and custom rides caused there to be very few original ones still intact and those which were left in an unmolested state became more valuable as the years went on. From top to bottom, inside and out, this vehicle stands tall with all the right parts and pieces to give this vehicle so much nostalgia it’s palpable. From the outside, the atlantic blue exterior looks sharp with all its chrome and emblems in great condition, the lights are all functioning and its original wheels with wide white wall tires add to the styling. This vehicle does come with its side skirts painted to match as well. The interior is like new with its original dash and gauges, the cloth two-tone material although re-upholstered, sits era-correct and in great condition and really sets this one apart from the rest. Most of the mercury models of this era were recreated into what became popular and aptly named the “lead sled”, this is a true survivor of any customization and coming from the warm parts of california, this vehicle is even more so rare due to its lack of heater!

Merc custom with professional 4" chopped roof, custom rear quarters with smaller skirts, front fender moldings, air ride suspension, custom bumpers, corvette grill, dodge wheel covers, power windows, tilt, and so much more!! By far one of the most sought after vehicles among professional customizers since they hit showrooms, the 1949-1951 mercury eight coupe. It was known that legendary customizers like sam and george barris chopped near new examples and immediately made them famous forever! We couldnt be more excited to offer this 1949 mercury eight coupe that has been professionally restored in proper custom fashion by a detroit, mi body shop owner. Starting with a proper platform vehicle, it was treated to every trick in the book to bring utterly outstanding results! The front fenders received decorative custom moldings across the fender leading into the door! Totally one of kind! The gas tank lid, door handles, trunk equipment, hood ornament, and body side trim were all shaved for a super clean, sculpted look! The lower window stainless steel was extended further into the rear portion of the trunk lid, while the headlights were frenched along with the tail lights being relocated lower in the rear quarter panel, also frenched using 1950 ford lenses. Once the body work and been massaged and leaded in true fashion, it was painted a candy purple metallic that looks amazing under the sun! The front end was highlighted with silver pearl ghost flames while the roof has a subtle added sparkle as if it were immolating stars in the sky! Additional features include a powerful 460ci lincoln continental v8 engine mated to a c6 automatic transmission and ford 9 rear axle. The front grill is super unique fitted with a 1954-55 chevrolet corvette unit, along with the front pillars with dual bullet spot lamps, dual outside door mirrors, polished 1957 dodge lancer hubcaps, and dual front and rear kaiser bumper guards professionally mated to the original bumpers! The effect is outstanding, especially the rear allowing the dual resonating exhaust to port directly through the guards themselves! The doors and trunk are fitted with electronic door poppers for easy access! The door windows are now power operated by using the original cranks in a simple up and down movement; very trick! Under the hood, the show continues with a custom fabricated steel radiator cover, cadillac air filter housing, chrome tubular upper & lower control arms, and extended fender covers all ha.
