Fresh styling, more power fire up ford's popular compact pickup. introductionone in three compact-class pickups sold last year was a ford ranger. More than 5 million rangers have been built since the first one rolled out in 1982. Ranger's new edge edition cast in monochrome begins at $14,435 with the 3. 0-liter v6 in a regular cab styleside design with two-wheel-drive. As a result, the ranger wears smooth new sheetmetal forms with a definitive new face in front and wheel blisters on flanks. ranger's strong face sparkles from new multi-beam reflector lamps flanking a large honeycomb grille underlined by a thick bumper with round fog lamps and central air intake port. sides show rolled shoulders and flat panels interrupted by etched horizontal character lines and the ripples of flares articulating front and rear wheelwells. The styleside design remains flat in continuous line stretching from tip to tail, but the flareside version carves a recessed step into each side panel immediately behind the cab and the notch accentuates a rounded rear fender. With the supercab extension, a tall and narrow side window mounts in the panel behind each door's window. Indentations in the bed support partitions to segment cargo. the new edge trim designation focuses on a monochromatic treatment with body-colored bumpers and hood raised in the power dome bump that hints at a powerhouse beneath the lid. Also, an optional new hard tonneau lid unfolds from front/rear sections divided by a central vertical partition, with a lock added on the forward bin for security. interiorthe ranger's cab has been revised for 2001 and more features have been added. The most noteworthy improvement -- a new quality of quietness -- cannot be seen because the additional baffles and insulation that surround the passenger compartment are concealed in the structure. Previous versions of ranger consistently set the standard among compact trucks for spacious, comfortable accommodations and convenient features. 2001 models build on that foundation with new seat designs clad in new fabrics, a revised instrument panel with tachometer supplied to all trims, and a revamped center pod for climate and audio systems with large easy-to-use rotary dials. the regular cab carries a bench seat that can squeeze three aboard. Two small side-facing jump seats may be added to the bay; each folds down from the back wall. Optional left and right rear-hinged doors for the supercab create easy access to rear quarters. ranger's new edge treatment, designed for active lifestyles, adds a textured rubber floor cover for wash-and-wear convenience. The bench splits 60/40, with side bolsters for outboard positions and a center armrest that folds down and contains a pop-top storage bin. This new option quickens acceleration performance and strengthens the ranger's trailer-towing ability. An increase of 47 horsepower over last year's most powerful ranger. This produces closer gear ratios for better throttle response when accelerating, towing a trailer or driving off road. A high-gear lockout switch on the tip of the shift lever enables a driver to kick up or down a gear with the tap of a finger. we drove a ranger supercab 4x4 with the 4. 0-liter v6 and optional five-speed automatic through nevada deserts on pavement and dirt. Offering the best power in its class, the ranger delivered no-fear passing, even in nevada's thin-air altitude. It could scamper up mountain grades or effortlessly pass a line of freight haulers. the ranger handled road bumps and curve sets with confident dexterity. A high ground clearance enables the ranger to clear ruts and bumps easily. And when it doesn't, skid plates shield the transfer case and fuel tank from damage. We drove a ranger 4x4 in the hungry valley off-road park northwest of los angeles. Rough, sandy roads failed to upset this truck even when it was driven quickly through rutted corners. But what was really surprising was its impressive handling and steering response on paved mountain roads. The front third of the frame now features fully boxed side frame rails for a significant increase in torsional rigidity. A rigid frame reduces unwanted vibration and allows the engineers to design a suspension that more precisely controls wheel movement for improved ride and handling. as a result, they developed a new front suspension with short- and long-arms that works with a rack-and-pinion steering system borrowed from the ford explorer for sharp steering response and improved cornering stability. When disengaged, all front driveline components are disconnected at the wheels, so fuel economy is improved and noise and vibration are reduced. the ranger's functional changes are wrapped in a tough new look. New sheet metal from the a-pillars forward lowers the hood line for improved visibility, high-speed stability and fuel efficiency. Ford redesigned the grille, bumpers, head lamps and parking lamps. The hood is aluminum to reduce weight. It is best suited for those who value fuel economy and low emissions. When equipped with the automatic transmission, it allows the ranger to qualify for california's low emissions vehicle standard. choose one of two v6 engines for serious pulling or hauling power. A 3. 0-liter v6 comes with a revised intake manifold that helps increase torque to 178 pound-feet and 147 horsepower. a 4. 0-liter v6 generates 223 pound-feet of torque and 158 horsepower; an optional five-speed automatic transmission is available with this engine that we highly recommend. all engines are kept cooler by bigger radiators. Regular cab wheelbases have been stretched to 111. 6 or 117. 5 inches, depending on body style. Extended cab (supercab) versions maintain a 125. 9-inch wheelbase. new splash models with chrome wheels are available for the fashion conscious in both 4x2 and 4x4 configuration. prices start at $11,895. The 4. 0-liter v6 added $450, the 5-speed automatic added $1,105. Options added another $665, but discounts totaled $1,445, resulting in a $22,810 bottom line for a top-of-the-line model. interiorregular cab rangers have been lengthened three inches. That's a big improvement as last year's regular cab models offered insufficient legroom for tall drivers and restricted rake for the seat backs. This year, there's more interior space, increased seat travel, and the seat can be reclined farther. There's also more space available behind the seat for storing stuff and a storage tray has been added to make this more convenient. we still recommend the roomy supercab models for all but the most serious of work trucks. The big benefits of the supercab are the increased cabin space and convenient storage for gear. the ranger shares the explorer's dash and easy to use switchgear and instrument panel. Steering response and handling in transient maneuvers could almost be described in sports car terms. Winding over narrow mountain roads north of los angeles, we found the ranger to be a vehicle that inspires confidence in the driver. Before long we were rounding curves with bravado usually reserved for sports sedans. it rides nice, too. The harshest ride is found in the splash models with suspensions tuned for improved handling. This five-speed automatic shifts as smoothly as a lexus and always keeps the v6 in its primary torque range and its efficiency matches that of the 5-speed manual. It's a great combination. summarythe new ranger may be the best compact pickup truck on the market. The styling is completely different, however, giving each a distinctive appearance. While the ford looks tough, the mazda looks sporty. They are both good-looking trucks and a debate rages as to which is more attractive. In fact, it's sixth overall on the list of top-selling vehicles in the u. For 1995. so, what's in store for '96? There are regular cab and supercab versions; shortbed (6 ft.) and longbed (7 ft.) models; the choice of 2-wheel drive or 4wd; base and uplevel trim packages (xl, xlt and stx); and the sporty flareside splash, with its stepside bed fabricated from composites rather than sheet steel. new this year is a flareside pickup box option for both the ranger xl and xlt regular and supercab models, available only with 2wd 4-cyl. Models. depending on the model, ranger pickups can accommodate anywhere from two to five passengers. For instance, the ranger is the first compact pickup truck to offer an optional passenger airbag to complement its standard driver's airbag. And, like its f-150 big brother, it has an added safety feature. To accommodate a rear-facing child seat, the passenger airbag can be deactivated with a key-operated dashboard switch. civilization is steadily overtaking the compact pickup class, a trend that's reflected in the ranger's list of standard and optional features. Driven primarily as image vehicles, they have to satisfy owners who expect passenger car features and comfort. walkaroundredesigned three years ago, the ranger's exterior styling--with the exception of the splash--is subdued and a little more traditional than the rounded look of gm's gmc sonoma and chevy s-series trucks. Each engine is available with a 5-speed manual transmission or optional 4-speed automatic. All specify 100,000-mile tuneup intervals, something that's new for the 4-cyl. This 4x4 model also has wheel flares and sporty aluminum alloy wheels. For '96, the p235/75r-15 tires have a new compound and new tread pattern to improve traction. the supercab has a wheelbase that is nearly 20 in. Longer than standard cab models with a standard cargo bed, and it's 15 in. The cargo box is 6 ft. And can accommodate a 4x8-ft. Sheet of building material riding above the wheelwells with the tailgate down. interiorthe interior makeover of the ranger has come about in two recent phases--'93 and '95--and for '96 it remains a carryover with the exception of the optional passenger airbag. In '95, designers created a more user-friendly instrument panel along with new seat materials. it's a relatively easy in and out of the ranger supercab, although, as is the case with most 4wd trucks, vertically-challenged drivers looking for a driver-side grab handle have to settle for the steering wheel to hoist themselves up. we found the gray cloth seats comfortable and appreciated the clear visibility that comes from the ranger's tall seating postion, ample glass, narrow a and b pillars and unobstructed rear view. the front seating positions have good head, leg, shoulder and hip room. This space is a much better place for things than people. however, the pivoting quarter windows and sliding rear window are useful for dialing in just the right flow of fresh air when the weather permits. gm's new third-door option on its extended cab sonoma and s-series trucks makes the space behind the front seats easier to use than the ranger supercab, and we expect to see a similar option in the next ranger redesign. the ranger's seats are newly fitted with automatic locking restraint/emergency locking restraint (alr/elr) belt systems that eliminate child seat clips and comply with new federal safety regulations. While there's a real globebox--non-locking--for some stowage, the door pockets are low and lilliputian. A rear cargo net is handy for keeping small items from thrashing around in the back of the cab. driving impressionthe ranger is a straightforward, easy-to-drive truck. We particularly appreciated the dash-mounted electric transfer case which shifts from 2wd to 4wd high to 4wd low with a simple flip of a switch--no more wrestling with a separate shift lever to engage the 4wd system. while the supercab's longer wheelbase smooths the highway ride on this truck, its longer dimensions make it a little less nimble off road. All in all, this is definitely a good light-duty workhorse on and off the pavement. we found the recirculating ball power steering to be precise and the twin i-beam front and rear leaf spring suspension gave a ride that felt solid and stable, considering the ranger's somewhat tall and narrow body dimensions. Models equipped with the 4. 0-liter v6 get 4-wheel abs, a definite plus. We think it's worth it. however, we should also note that the ranger price scale starts well below this figure.
