Conceived before wwii, the design was to provide the french people with a cheap car in the same image of the ford model t or vw beetle. Using extremely simple and durable designs for a low cost, the 2cv was an ingenious design. The car was so inexpensive to purchase and operate and was capable on and off the road in the rough french countryside. It was describe as a world car like none other and over 9 million 2cvs and their variants were sold from 1948 to 1990. The current owner bought the car in california where it was most likely imported. It features a two tone burgundy and black exterior and a grey interior. Overall the condition of the car is excellent with minimal marks or damage. The glass is intact and the car appears to be fully functioning. While early models came with a 373cc h2 cylinder that pumped out a breathtaking 9 hp, this model appear to have the 602cc h2 that produces about 29hp. It is mated to a unique “twist” style manual gear selector which controls a 4-speed manual. The current owner says that the clutch, new top, and new top have been recently installed. Some of the cool features of this car included a full length sliding cloth sunroof, glass windows, interior seats, and exterior door handles. The sm was citroën's flagship vehicle, competing with other high-performance gts of the time from manufacturers such as jaguar, lotus, ferrari, aston martin, alfa romeo and porsche. France had not had a production vehicle in this segment after world war ii, except for the export oriented chrysler v8 engine facel vega in the late 1950s. The thriving french luxury car industry was decimated by post-world war ii puissance fiscale regulation, which has hamstrung french manufacturers for decades. It borrows heavily from the innovations introduced on the ds, by including hydro-pneumatic (oleopneumatic) self-leveling suspension, and self-leveling lights that swiveled with the steering (except in the usa where these were illegal at the time). With its distinctly modernist influence, the interior styling of the sm is as dramatic as the exterior. The small oval steering wheel is matched by oval gauges. The manual shift lever 'boot' is a highly stylized chrome gate. The seats are highly adjustable buckets with centre padding composed of many individual 'rolls'. High-quality materials are used throughout. The bonnet is aircraft grade aluminum, while the external bright work is stainless steel, rather than ‘cheaper’ chrome (except for "plastichrome" "sm" trim at the rear base of the rain gutter). In 1970, it was a car of the future and the fastest front-wheel-drive car, with a factory-quoted top speed of 220 km/h (140 mph), and independent tests achieving as much as 235 km/h (146 mph). It was an example of the car as a symbol of optimism and progressive technology, similar to the sm's contemporary, the concorde aircraft. S 2005 "100 coolest cars" listing. The first repaint is of extremely high quality with no dings, scratches, chips or touch up on this always garaged example the interior is excellent to include seats, door & side panels, headliner and a flawless dash / console with no cracks. The vehicle has it's original sound system. These vehicles were exported to us dealers during the 1972-73 model years in small numbers (2,037) and have had a high attrition rate due to neglect and limited knowledgeable repair facilities. Usable examples are uncommon while examples of this caliber should be considered rare.
