2008 chevrolet aveo review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Nice interior in an inexpensive package. introductionthe chevrolet aveo is chevy's smallest, least expensive car. Aside from its price, what's most attractive about aveo is its surprisingly handsome interior, at least on the up-level lt. Aveo's basic architecture and mechanical underpinnings date to 2004, and there are no significant changes for 2008. aveo was designed to offer sensible, day-to-day transportation. Its ride is tuned more for comfort than sporty driving, and this is where it differs from the frisky honda fit. But many of us spend more time commuting through heavy, stop-and-go traffic than challenging the nurburgring circuit. aveo is epa-estimated to deliver 24 mpg in the city and 34 on the highway. That's compares well with the hyundai accent (27/32 mpg), nissan versa (26/31). The honda fit (28/34) and toyota yaris (29/36) are more efficient but when it comes to purchase price look for better deals on the aveo. we found the aveo to be an enjoyable car to spend time with, particularly the lt with its nice cloth upholstery. The climate and audio controls are easy to use and the driver's seat adjusts for height and it drives well. Air conditioning is not included, although it can be installed by the dealer. Automatic transmission is not available, nor are power windows, locks, or mirrors. Perforated leatherette is optional 250). safety features include dual-stage frontal and seat-mounted side air bags for the front seats, along with front-seat seat-belt pretensioners, which take slack out of the belt in a crash. New for 2008 is a tire-pressure monitor. Anti-lock brakes 400) are optional for ls and lt; we strongly recommend getting them because they can help the driver maintain control in an emergency braking situation. walkaroundthe chevy aveo is about the same length as the toyota yaris, almost a foot shorter than the honda fit. The re-styling for 2008 gave the aveo a more aerodynamic shape, one of the benefits of which has been to reduce wind noise at highway speeds. up front, a thick, bright horizontal grille bar emblazoned with a gold bowtie leaves no doubt that aveo is a chevy. The lower fascia is nicely detailed, and the fog lights well integrated. Moving around to the side, a crisp bevel just below the window line and a parallel bulge down between the wheel arches combine to camouflage the aveo's tall, stubby profile, sort of like a person wearing appropriately directed stripes. The sedan's blacked-out window frames look heavy handed, however, especially with bright colors. Around back, a bright band between fashionably complex tail lamps echoes the theme of the grille. but like many cars, the aveo sedan has a look that tries to find wide acceptability by not offending anybody. But in its attempt to be neither too boring nor too radical, it lacks personality. the same cannot be said of the aveo5, which shares surprisingly little sheet metal with the sedan. It has personality all right, but it's not the kind everyone will like. At just 152. 7 inches in overall length, the aveo5 is a significant 17 inches shorter than the sedan, and despite some fairly ambitious, curvy sculpturing in the doors and rear quarters (contrasting with the crisp feel of the sedan), it all seems to end rather abruptly, just behind the rear wheels. This impression is greatly heightened by a rear-end profile that's more station-wagon vertical than hatchback sleek, and by the almost comically abbreviated quarter windows just behind the rear doors. About the best chevy can hope is that the resulting rubber-duck ugliness appeals to grownups still missing their favorite tub toy. interestingly, while the aveo5 looks as tall as a bus, it actually measures 0. 4 inches lower than the sedan. All radios come with an auxiliary jack for ipods and other mp3 players. the driver's seat is height adjustable, even in the special value model, a nice feature for drivers short and tall. The front seat bottom cushion is a bit short for drivers with long legs, cutting some occupants a little short on thigh support. rear legroom is an advantage the aveo has over the honda fit and toyota yaris. That's competitive in a segment like this, and the back seat folds down if the priority becomes carrying stuff instead of people. the aveo5 hatchback has just 7. 0 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats, but that expands to a wagon-like 42. 0 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. The aveo would be a bad choice for a tight pass on a two-lane road, but with a little thought and planning there shouldn't be any problems merging onto a busy freeway, even with a passenger. we've always been more impressed with the chevrolet aveo's ride than its handling. A thicker front sway bar, stiffer front springs, tighter front shocks, and re-tuned bushings, improved the handling beginning with the 2007 model. Like many front-wheel-drive cars, the aveo feels nose heavy when driven hard, and it doesn't offer the responsive handling found in the honda fit. Try and go fast through a moderately tight turn and the aveo's body leans quite a bit. That's part of the price for a more comfortable ride, particularly on a broken surface. The exception is when the driver slams the accelerator pedal to the floor and holds it there. The chevrolet aveo sedan combines a fuel efficient engine, seating for 5, ample cargo space and a host of standard and optional features for a very affordable price. The front-wheel drive aveo 4-door sedan is available in two trims. The ls comes standard with power steering, body colored mirrors, 14 inch wheels, front cloth bucket seats, air conditioning and an am/fm radio. The lt trim adds power mirrors, windows and door locks with remote keyless entry. The lt also comes standard with interior and exterior chrome accents, 1.

Good driver, excellent value. introductionthe chevrolet aveo is cheap wheels, but it's an enjoyable car with a pleasant cabin. Aveo is based on the daewoo kalo, a korean car that's popular in many countries around the world. the base models are basic, but the interiors are quite nice. The front seats are comfortable and the back seats are surprisingly roomy. The aveo looks good, particularly the sedan, and the body panels fit well. zippy performance and sharp steering make the aveo fun to drive, while a decent ride and reasonably quiet cabin make for pleasant everyday transportation. A five-speed manual gearbox comes standard; an automatic 850) is an option for ls and lt models. the special value model 9,455) comes standard with dual-stage frontal airbags and side-impact airbags, vented front disc brakes, halogen headlamps, a height-adjustable driver's seat, child safety seat system, manually operated side-view mirrors, tinted glass, tilt steering wheel, 60/40 split folding rear seat, am/fm stereo, two-speed intermittent variable wipers, and a rear window defogger. Air conditioning is not available; in fact, the only option is an engine block heater 35). The hatchback is priced the same as the sedan, and adds a wiper/washer on the liftgate window. ls 11,370) adds air conditioning and carpeted floormats. The manufacturer's suggested retail price of the hatchback and sedan are the same. Cruise control and remote keyless entry are available as a package 395) on 2006 models, and a cd/mp3 stereo is optional 300). A rear spoiler 225) is available for the hatchback. the lt hatchback 12,790) and 13,015) are upgraded with deluxe front seats, power windows, power locks with remote keyless entry, power passenger-side mirror, a cd player with mp3 capability, 14-inch aluminum wheels. The lt hatchback comes standard with the rear spoiler. A six-speaker sound system 250) and a power sunroof 725) are optional. safety features include optional anti-lock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution 400) available for ls and lt. For 2006, all models come with advanced dual-stage airbags that use chevy's passenger sensing system to shut off the passenger airbag if it detects a child seat there. In addition, 2006 models come standard with side-impact airbags. walkaroundthe chevrolet aveo body was created in giorgetto giugiaro's italdesign studio in turin, italy. The italian influence shows, especially in the smooth sedan. the sedan and five-door hatchback ride on the same relatively generous 97. 6-inch wheelbase, but the sedan is 14 inches longer overall. Giugiaro used that extra length to make the sedan look more like a real car, and not so much like a toy. the aveo sedan is better looking than the kia rio. It's nose is simple and clean with tidy shapes. The headlights are horizontal and nicely rounded at the corners, underlined in amber by long, thin turn signals. Both front and rear bumpers are body colored and integrate well with the shape of the car. as sleek little hatchbacks go, the aveo five-door isn't quite as good looking as the scion xa, but it holds its own. The taillights, chunky and efficient, have a nice physical edge to them. The roofline is rounded, sloping back to meet the optional spoiler over the liftgate. Character lines run from the front wheelwell to the rear, which may or may not add character. The fit of the body panels is visibly tight, something not usually seen in such a low-priced, entry-level car. aveo aced the federal frontal crash test with five stars for both driver and passenger. The body structure is designed to provide as much crash protection as possible. The cabin is built like a steel cage, with steel members running vertically from the door hinge up the a-pillars to the roofline, then back to reinforced b- and c-pillars, and down to the rocker panels. Revised gray fabrics and a new charcoal/titanium color scheme dress things up nicely. The instrument panel is simple, while still presenting the important information in big gauges: speedo, tach, fuel and coolant temp. There's some silly pseudo carbon fiber in the door handles, and the golfball grain on the dash looks rough; but cadillacs have it too. There are a number of thoughtful slots and pockets for storing things, including a lighted glovebox. There's a floor console with a storage compartment, and an extra 12-volt power outlet. we drove an aveo lt on a hot texas day and found the air conditioning excellent. The big, round, old-fashioned black gearshift knob with black boot seems simple and appropriate for the no-frills aveo. we crawled in the back seat and discovered lots of room back there, as well as good visibility, thanks to aveo's theater seating. The rear seats are elevated, a feat made possible by aveo's high roof. The rear seat of the sedan folds flat and opens up the 11. 7 cubic-foot trunk, while the rear seat of the five-door further flips forward with the touch of one finger, yielding a relatively cavernous 42 cubic-foot cargo area. to minimize wind, road and engine noise, there's a lot of sound insulation located under the hood and floor, and in the doors and dash panel. driving impressionwith an inexpensive compact, it seems there is no middle ground in acceleration: it's either zippy or it's a dog. The aveo is zippy with zoom to spare, at least with the standard manual transmission, a solid-feeling five-speed gearbox. The gas pedal seems a bit mushy, but the engine works hard to overcome it. The little aveo will chirp the tires in second gear. aveo also features some surprisingly sophisticated engineering. Its little engine breathes through a variable-geometry intake system that helps fatten the torque curve at low rpm. As a result, there's plenty of power from 2000 rpm in the lower gears all the way up to 6000 rpm. The engine noise is low thanks to the deep-skirt construction of the block itself, along with a large intake resonator and dual-muffler exhaust system. we gave the manual gearbox some good hard downshifts, and it took them without complaint. One has to admire this simple, mechanical alternative to the electronic tip-shift devices found on far more expensive automobiles. from behind the wheel the sedan seems bigger than it is, or maybe it's actually bigger than it seems it should be. Whatever the reason, it's a good thing for a subcompact to feel bigger. The rack-and-pinion steering is sharp, and the torsion beam rear axle gives the car a grown-up feel. With a turning circle of just 16 feet, aveo can make a u-turn in a ridiculously small space. That makes it extremely maneuverable in tight, crowded quarters. suspension and steering tweaks coupled with the available 15-inch wheels and tires are designed to improve the handling of the 2006 models. aveo is sufficiently damped to offer a good ride even through a choppy construction zone and over twisty back roads. The vented front discs are large for the size of the car, and the rear drums have wide linings. We recommend the optional anti-lock brakes with brake force distribution, which improves stability and helps the driver maintain control under hard braking. The frame structure is designed with safety in mind. The cabin is quiet, and there's good room in the rear seats.
