The owner did not want to mess a true buick gsx, but did want the looks. So 15 years ago he bought this fine old skylark and the process began. The muscular good looks of this car go more than just skin deep. The paint color is ford f1 paint. Under the hood of this buick is the heartbeat of a chevy beast. A 489 cubic inch big block engine built by knieriem racing engines of louisville kentucky resides in the engine compartment. The engine is fresh and ready for the track or street. Yes, its street legal! The engine has been filled with all the good stuff including speed pro forged pistons, a forged stroker crank and h-bean rods with arp rod bolts. Insuring that plenty of air and fuel gets in is a set of brodix cylinder heads that have been port matched to an edelbrock super victor intake. A top the intake is a gary william prepared holley dominator carburetor flowing 1300 cfm. Hooker super competition hookers take care of the spent fumes. An art carr turbo 400 transmission with a 5000 stall converter get the power from the engine to the built ford 9 inch sporting 4. 30 gears with 31 spline moser axles. The suspension has been set up specifically for the track using hotchkis tubular control arms, ball joints, tie rod ends and drag link. Finished in code 14 silver mist, it's one of the less common gs colors and truly emphasizes what a special car the grand sport really was. Dressed for success, the big buick was upscale instead of a street brawler, and brought serious class to a segment that seemed to only care about horsepower. The restoration brought this one to a very high level, with a great gloss on the surface and straight, clean sheetmetal underneath. There are a few signs of use, but for a car that can generate speed as easily as this one does, they're surprisingly minor, and we love the way the silver look without a vinyl top, which was a familiar sight on buicks that year. Those unique gs grilles are superb, the red-accented rocker panel trim is bright, and the twin-snorkel hood adds to the racy vibe. The sucker looks fast just sitting still. Buick's big advantage, aside from massive torque, was its luxury background. There's an am ratio that's period-correct and blends right in and as a buick, factory a/c was part of the package, although this system needs to be serviced. The trunk is solid an clean with painted floor pans that leave problems no place to hide. The gs's claim to fame was the massive 455 cubic inch v8 under the hood. Unlike a lot of its peers, it hasn't been upgraded with aftermarket parts, and still carries its oem intake manifold, carburetor, heads, and exhaust manifolds. Nicely detailed with dante red paint on the valve covers, a correct twin-snorkel air cleaner, and accurate finishes throughout, it looks quite fresh and runs great. It's backed by a stout th400 3-speed automatic transmission that has also been rebuilt at some point, and there's a fresh magnaflow exhaust that sounds fantastic. They've also added a r. Along with the GS 455 package, one could also have it equipped with what Buick called the Stage I option. All of these performance upgrades brought the horsepower to 360, and the torque was rated at 510, at 2,800-RPMs. According to the window sticker this Stage I Buick was equipped with a full length console, power disc brakes, power steering, Sonomatic radio, super wide oval white billboard lettered tires, chrome plated wheels, Rallye ride control package, air conditioning, speed alert, tinted windshield, door guards, remote control mirror, tilt steering wheel, instrument gauges, Rallye clock, protective side moldings, protective fender moldings, Rallye steering wheel and custom vinyl roof covering. The big block oiling modifications are complete; and the rotating assemble has been balanced. Equipped on the car is an Edelbrock Performer 455 Buick intake manifold with a Quick Fuel Technologies SS 750-cfm carburetor. The spark for the ignition is supplied by a MSD Pro-Billet plug and play distributor and a Blaster 2 ignition coil. The stock cast iron exhaust manifolds are equipped. HISTORY The 400 was replaced for 1970 with the {7.4 litre} Buick V8, used in the GS 455. The base model V8 was rated 350 hp (260 kW) and 510 lb·ft (690 N·m) at 2800 rpm. In the optional Stage1 trim it was rated** 360 hp (268 kW) and 510 lb·ft (691 Nm) at a low 2800 rpm. As with all American engines produced prior to the 1972 model year, these were SAE gross ratings, which are generally significantly higher than SAE net ratings and are not indicative of what actual production engines produce in their "as installed" condition (with all engine accessories and full exhaust system in place). The fastest magazine test results from this period were obtained by MOTOR TREND Magazine, which managed to extract a 13.38 ET @ 105.5 MPH from their 3,810 pound GS Stage 1 coupe test car. Using Hale's Trap Speed formula, this result indicated actual "as installed" peak HP of approximately 360 SAE Net (ironically the same as its advertised Gross Figure, meaning this engine was very conservatively rated for that time period). The use of the larger sized 455 block created a maintenance problem by the exhaust manifolds being in too close proximity to the upper and lower A-arm bushings. Heat would literally melt the A-arm bushings after a relatively short period of time; rapid tire wear and front end alignment difficulties were the first sign of this common problem, which was common to all makes and models of this GM body style with the 455 engine. It was not uncommon for front ends to be rebuilt with grease fittings added, to "lube" the bushings at the A-arms, to help against the heat.
